Dun’gee
Southeast Winds
(doon’gee)
Dun’gee is the season of the Southeast Winds, when cooler winds move across Country and bring changes to the land, waterways, and ocean. During this time, Kabi Kabi families would closely observe the signs of nature, using knowledge passed down through generations to understand when to fish, gather food, travel, and prepare for the changing season. The cooler weather and steady southeast winds signalled important seasonal changes across Country.
The ocean also provides important signs during Dun’gee. Humpback whales can be seen migrating north along the Sunshine Coast coastline, dolphins are often present in local waters, and schools of mullet move through rivers and estuaries during the cooler months. By observing these movements, along with changes in plants, animals, and weather, people could better understand the rhythms of Country and the responsibilities that came with the season.
