Animals Within The Game

Kangaroo

Kabi Kabi Language Name: Mari

The Grey Kangaroo is one of the most recognised animals found across South East Queensland and Kabi Kabi Country. These powerful animals live in grasslands, open forests and bushland areas, often gathering in family groups known as mobs. Kangaroos have long been an important part of Aboriginal culture, providing food, materials and knowledge about Country. Today, they remain an important symbol of the Australian landscape and the connection between people and the natural world.

Emu

The Emu is Australia's largest native bird and has lived across Kabi Kabi Country for thousands of years. Emus are strong runners that travel long distances through forests, grasslands and open country in search of food and water. They have long been important to Aboriginal people, providing food, feathers and materials for cultural items. Emus also feature in many stories and teachings that help pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

The Djaa Teacher Hub extends the learning beyond the game, providing access to lesson ideas, activities, student task cards, videos, and cultural resources that help bring classroom learning to life. Students love exploring the Djaa world, but the Teacher Hub helps them connect that experience to real-world culture, Country, history, and community.

Journey alongside Buangan and his family as he learns from Elders, develops new skills, explores Country, attends the Bunya Dreaming gathering, creates tools and weapons, makes fire, and grows in knowledge, responsibility, and connection to community. Through Djaa, students experience culture through story, exploration, and learning — seeing the world through the eyes of a young Kabi Kabi boy as he finds his place within his community.
